How it works
Three questions, honest answers.
What does tinify.ai actually do?
Most tools handle one thing. tinify.ai handles everything your image needs before it goes live — upscaling, resizing, compression, and SEO tagging — in a single workflow. Drop your files, set an output size and format if you need to, and click Tinify. You get back images that are sharper, smaller, and properly tagged. No tool-switching, no manual steps.
How does the compression work?
When you upload an image, the compression engine analyzes it the way your eye reads it — not blindly, but by evaluating textures, color gradients, and patterns as a whole. It identifies the maximum amount of data it can remove before you'd notice any difference: invisible metadata, redundant color information, overhead from your export tool. Most images come back 70–80% smaller. The quality looks the same because, to the human eye, it is.
What's the AI actually doing?
Two things. Upscaling uses Real-ESRGAN, a model trained to reconstruct fine detail from low-resolution images — not just stretch pixels, but infer what the missing sharpness should look like. Tagging uses Gemini, which reads the final processed image and writes alt text and a filename that describe what's actually in the photo. Both run automatically in the background. You don't configure anything.

Loved by Thousands of Users
Don't take our word for it. Here's what real users say about tinify.ai
Honestly? Game changer. Our product pages were loading like molasses because our photographers kept uploading 8MB images straight from their cameras. I'd spend hours every week running them through random compression sites, praying they wouldn't look like garbage. tinify.ai does it automatically now and I literally got 3 hours of my life back. Site speed went from 4.2s to 1.8s. Boss is happy, I'm not stressed, customers actually wait for pages to load. Worth every penny.
OK so I'm obsessed??? I've been designing websites for like 6 years and image optimization has always been THE WORST part of my workflow. tinify.ai's integration is actually insane - I export, it compresses, done. My client sites are flying now and I don't have to explain to another small business owner why their 5000px wide hero image is a bad idea lol. 10/10 would recommend to literally anyone who touches images.
Integrated the API into our CI/CD pipeline in about 20 minutes. We're processing ~50K user-uploaded images per month and the compression ratio is consistently impressive - averaging 65-70% reduction with negligible quality loss. The automatic format detection is solid, and fallback handling is clean. Pricing is reasonable at scale. Much better than rolling our own solution with ImageMagick.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about tinify.ai
Images are typically the largest files on any webpage, and Google uses page speed as a direct ranking factor. Unoptimized images slow down your Core Web Vitals, hurt your search rankings, and increase hosting bandwidth costs. A 2MB product photo that tinify.ai compresses to 400KB loads five times faster with no visible difference. For e-commerce sites especially, that speed improvement shows up directly in conversion rates.
Drop your images, pick your output settings if you need to, and click Tinify. Behind the scenes, your image moves through four steps in sequence: Real-ESRGAN upscales it if the resolution is too low, resizing adjusts it to your target dimensions with subject-aware cropping, TinyPNG's compression engine strips out everything your eye won't notice, and Gemini writes alt text and a descriptive filename for the final image. The whole thing takes about 2–3 seconds per image.
No — and here's why. tinify.ai uses perceptual compression, not blind size reduction. TinyPNG's algorithm analyzes each image's textures, patterns, and color gradients to find the smallest file size the human eye won't notice a difference at. Unnecessary metadata is stripped, not your image detail. Most images shrink 70–80% with no visible quality loss.

tinify.ai supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, BMP, TIFF, AVIF, GIF, SVG, and ICO for input/upload. We support JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, SVG, and ICO for export/download. You can convert any supported input format to any output format. Animated GIFs stay animated when the output format is GIF. SVG files can be optimized as vectors or converted to/from raster formats.
When you output as ICO, tinify.ai automatically generates a complete favicon set with sizes 16×16, 24×24, 32×32, 48×48, and 256×256 from your image. If you specify exact dimensions with the resize option, the ICO will contain only that single size. Non-square images are center-cropped for clean favicon results.
Free tier files are stored for 24 hours. Pro users get 7 days, and Max users get 14 days. After that, files are automatically deleted for your privacy and security.
